This necklace is a tribute to my father, Leonard Naphtali, and the ingenuity he carried with him. Born in 1927, Leonard's parents emigrated from Ioannina, Greece, and settled in Brooklyn. In their apartment during the Depression, they used a gas and electric meter that took coins for payment. To stretch their resources, they drilled a hole in the coins and tied them with string, to reuse them and keep the electricity on longer. It may have been a clever workaround, but it was a testament to doing whatever it took to survive.
